The city of Buenos Aires is divided into 46 neighborhoods. Each one has its own life, history and places of interest. The list of details is too long to include here. This section is dedicated to those people who visit our city and want to know something about the different neighborhoods where our apartment for rent is located. Almagro This neighborhood has always had its own personality. Home of tango, poetry, political leaders, clubs, the most beautiful church in Buenos Aires, etc. Plaza Almagro is located in a square surrounded by the following streets: Salguero, Sarmiento, Bulnes and Perón. A great gathering place has always been the corner of Rivadavia and Medrano Streets or the corner of Rivadavia and Castro Barros where you can find "Las Violetas", a beautiful pastry place founded in 1884. The Flower Market is the most beautiful one in Buenos Aires and one of the busiest markets at an international level. It sells more than 400.000 baskets of flowers each year and you can get there from Corrientes Ave. or from Medrano and Figueroa Streets. These are some of the cultural centers of this neighborhood: Centro Cultural "Alfonsina Storni": Tucumán 3233 - Tel 4862-1275. Centro Cultural "Asociación Mutual Homero Manzi": Belgrano 3542 - Tel 4956-2265. Centro Cultural "Lola Mora": Río de Janeiro 946 - Tel 4983-5877 4862-7245. Centro Cultural "Sebastián Piana": Av. Independencia 4053 Tel 4957-6218. Celebrities who lived in Almagro: Carlos Gardel, Alfonsina Storni, José Betinoti, Osvaldo Pugliese, Sebastián Piana, Antonio Sassone. Palermo It is one of the largest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, with forests, gardens and lakes. It's the largest "green lung" of Buenos Aires. This neighborhood is divided as follows: Altos de Palermo: It's the highest level of the neighborhood where you can find the "Altos de Palermo" Commercial Center. Parque Las Heras occupies an area of approximately 25 acres; as years passed by it became a residential area. The Forests of Palermo: It's towards the north side through Figueroa Alcorta Avenue. There, you can find plazas, parks, lakes, gardens, hills, clubs and monuments, and a web of streets and avenues. Places of interest: The Zoo, The Botanical Garden, The Rural Society of Argentina, The Race Track (Hipódromo Argentino) and the Municipal Planetarium. Las Cañitas: At the beginning it was called Camino de Las Cañitas (Las Cañitas Road), which is now Luis Maria Campos Avenue, a neighborhood known for its numerous restaurants. Palermo Chico: It's also known as 'Barrio Parque' (Park Neighborhood) and it's a very elegant and exclusive residential area. It's located on Figueroa Alcorta Avenue between Taglia and San Martín de Tours Streets. It's an ensemble of luxurius mini-mansions where you can find numerous foreign Embassies. One point of reference is the Instituto Samaritano (Samaritan Institute). Palermo Viejo: It's the oldest part of the Palermo area; it's located behind Plaza Italia towards the southeast side. It still has the charm of the good old times with the 'Plazoleta Julio Cortazar' (Small Plaza), the small short streets and the old houses painted with different colors. Part of this neighborhood is called "Villa Freud" due to the fact that numerous psychoanalysts have their offices there. It also has a bohemian flare that makes it very interesting. Busy bookshops and restaurants where people go during the day and mostly at night surround it. Recoleta At the very beginning it was called "Barrio de Retiro", like "Barrio Norte". It's one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. Through it's old buildings you can feel the European Architecture from the last century. Places of interest: Centro Cultural Recoleta: Junin 1930 - Tel 4803-4051 4803-4556/9744. This building from the 18th century is one of the oldest ones in Buenos Aires. Activities: Theater, Dance, Concerts book presentations, conferences, movie houses. Cementerio de la Recoleta (Cemetery): Junín 1760. It was built in 1822 and remodeled several times. Most of its graves are considered as National Historical Monuments and they represent the opulent lifestyle in Buenos Aires between 1880 and 1930. Iglesia del Pilar (Church): Junín 1920. It's the second oldest church in the city; it was inaugurated in 1732. It was designed by a Jesuit architect, Andrés Blanqui. It's interior is pure baroque style. Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes: Av. Libertador 1473. Here you can see both its permanent collections and international exhibitions. It's one of the most important museums in Latin America. Palais de Glace (Ice Palace): Posadas 1725. Plastic Art and photography exhibitions. Centro Municipal de Exposiciones: Ave. del Libertador y Ave. Pueyrredón. Biblioteca Nacional (National Library): Agüero 2502. You can find over a million books, Biblioteca Ricardo Guiraldes (Library): Talcahuano 1261 Tel. 4812-1814. San Telmo San Telmo is considered as the typical tango neighborhood with guitar players/singers and its numerous antique shops so full of history and nostalgia. It inspired to several artists and nowadays its restaurants, plazas and shops are one of most popular places in the capital city. Those old traditional houses with patios and small plethoric shops with all those objects full of memories and history surround the streets of San Telmo. Among the famous old houses you can find Dr. Vicente Lopez y Planes' home. It's considered the oldest house in Buenos Aires. Parque Lezama is an important public attraction. La Feria de Artesanos (Craftsmen Fair) in Plaza Dorrego is another interesting and traditional place to visit where you can find antiques and other interesting art objects. Museo de Arte Moderno (Museum of Modern Art): Av. San Juan 350 - Tel 4361-1121. Permanent collections, with rich Argentine contemporary plastic art. Museo de Historia Nacional (Museum of National History): Defensa 1600 Tel.: 4307-1182 Fax.: 4307-4457. Founded in 1889; you can find everything related to the history of the country.
